In office
1857 – 1863
Born 7 February 1801, Scotland
Died 15 July 1871, Anerley, England

James Busby (7 February 1801 - 15 July 1871) was involved in the drafting of the Declaration of the Independence of New Zealand, the Treaty of Waitangi and is widely regarded as the “father” of the Australian wine industry, as he took the first collection of vine stock from Spain and France to Australia. He was New Zealand’s first public servant.
Life

He was born in Scotland, the son of English engineer John Busby, and the family imigrated from Britain to New South Wales in 1824.

Busby soon returned to England where he worked for the government before visiting Spain and France to study viticulture. In March 1832 he was appointed to the position of British Resident of New Zealand and went to the Bay of Islands, taking with him some of the vine stock he had collected in Europe. He married Agnes Dow at Segenhoe, in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales on 1 November 1832.

A house was completed for him at Waitangi where he planted a vineyard from which wine was being made before his vines were productive in Australia. (Long before Busby arrived at Waitangi, missionary Samuel Marsden had already planted vines at nearby Kerikeri, on September 25 1819). His duties were to protect British commerce, control and mediate between the unruly Pākehā settlers and Māori in New Zealand. However he was not provided with any resources to impose this authority.

James Busby proposed that New Zealand should have a national flag, after an unregistered New Zealand ship was seized in Australia. A selection of three or four designs was sent from Australia, and one was chosen by the Māori chiefs at a meeting at his residency on 20 March 1834; see United Tribes of New Zealand.

In 1835 Busby learned that Baron Charles Philippe Hippolyte de Thierry, a Frenchman, was proposing to declare French sovereignty over New Zealand. He drafted the Declaration of the Independence of New Zealand and at a meeting in October signed it together with 35 chiefs from the northern part of New Zealand.

After the arrival of William Hobson, he co-authored with him the Treaty of Waitangi. It was signed on 5 and 6 February 1840 on the lawn outside his residence. Busby and his family left Waitangi that year.

He died in Anerley, England of ‘congestion of the lungs’ in 1871 and is buried at West Norwood Cemetery in London. His wife returned to New Zealand where she died, at Pakaraka in 1889, and is buried at Paihia.

The Waitangi property, on which the Treaty was signed, was derelict until the 1930s, when it was purchased by the Governor-General of the day Viscount Bledisloe and donated to the nation.

Putra said that the official tariff for document processing is posted at all immigration offices and promised to fire any officials found to be charging “additional fees” for immigration services.

Separately, BisnisBali interviewed an unnamed woman who admitted that she regularly uses the services of non-official “go betweens” to save money and time when processing immigration matters. Immigrations documents should be completed within 3 working days after paying the official fee and the presentation of a photo copy of current identity card (KTP), a family card (Kartu Keluarga) and a birth certificate (akte lahir).

Residents of Jakarta, Depok, Serpong and Tangerang that work into the evening can now possibly make use of the new train services from PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI) in the Jabodetabek area, which is going to run an economy fare electric train service starting this evening. The head of the train station in Bogor, Yuherman, said that the state-owned train company is to use trains on the two added timetables for the Jakarta-Bogor and Jakarta-Serpong evening services.

Two other evening services - Jakarta-Bekasi and Jakarta-Tangerang - are considered at the moment. The economy class electric trains with air conditioning stop at every station. Tickets will be 6.000 Rupiah (40 eurocent). This new train service is started up to help the people getting proper transport during the evening hours, since the cost of public transport has risen quickly after the government hiked prices of subsidized fuels late last month.

“The train on the route Jakarta-Bogor departs from Bogor at 21:00 and from Jakarta at 22:30. In this way it can help employees that work during the evening hours a better and more steady form of transport on the way home,” Yuherman said.

Extra long buses for the Trans-Jakarta bus way system - often named just ‘Busway’ - will be used on the route Kampung Melayu-Ancol, or Corridor V. The launch of the new buses was executed by the governor of Jakarta, Fauzi Bowo yesterday morning. Ten new extra long buses have been prepared to be operational starting from today. These new buses can only be used on this corridor, because the infrastructure here is completely ready as well.

The long buses, together with the regular buses, will transit at the Sentral Senen bus-stop. The long buses will not use the fly-over to prevent traffic jams from occurring. The normal buses however will use the fly-over in Senen. The bus-stops for the long buses have three doors instead of just one.

Passengers board the buses via the front an back doors. The door in the middle is used to step off the bus. However the buses are slightly slower than the normal buses, they are capable of transporting much more passengers as well. Up to 180 passengers can be in the bus at any time. The operational hours for the extra long buses will be the same as for the regular buses on the Trans-Jakarta routes, from 05:00 to 22:00 local time.

The Meteorological and Geophysical Institute BMG has predicted that waves with heights up to four meters will occur in the seas south of Merauke. Waves this high are dangerous to all kinds of vessels. Based on forecasts from BMG, high waves with heights between three and four meters will also occur in the Arafuru Sea. The conditions are dangerous enough for any passing vessel like freighters, ferries and fishing boats.

Waves with heights between two and three meters are forecasted for the seas north of Aceh, west of Bengkulu until Lampung, the seas south of Java until East Nusa Tenggara, the Sawu Sea, the Sangihe Talaud archipelago and Aru archipelago. These conditions are also dangerous for fishermen and small freighters. Other parts of Indonesia will most likely also be hit by higher-than-normal waves, but they don’t reach up to two meters, which is the level where fishing boats still have to be careful.

The head of the regional branch there, Haris Kampai, said that they would fight anyone near their office demanding the disbandment of FPI. “The Riau branch of FPI has never had any anarchist behavior, it’s Ahmadiyah that should be disbanded, not FPI”, said Haris, pointing at a sect that is said to deviate from Islam.
Earlier this afternoon, hundreds of people from various elements from the Indonesian society showed up at the FPI branch office in Bandung, West Java, where they also demanded the disbandment of the FPI. The office is heavily guarded by local police because there were already rumors about groups arriving to demonstrate.
