Fuel prices to rise 30% when the new day starts

23 May 2008 - Finally the puzzle has been solved. After a long time of waiting the government has finally announced that the fuel prices for subsidized fuels will be raised by almost 30% on average. The decision was finalized at 21:15 west Indonesian time. The change in prices will be effective from May, 24 2008 which was less than three hours away for most Indonesians when the decision was made.

The prices are as following: regular petrol (premium) Rp. 6.000, up from Rp. 4.500, diesel (solar) Rp. 5.500, up from Rp. 4.300 and cooking oil will become Rp. 2.500, up from Rp. 2.000. According to Purnomo Yusgiantoro, minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, these prices are valid for small consumers, small businesses, fishermen and public transport on land and water.

Kalla: ‘I hope you will watch television tonight’

23 May 2008 - Vice-president Yusuf Kalla said that he hoped that Indonesians would be watching television tonight. This might be a clearest signal until now that drastic hikes in subsidized fuels are imminent. Some say they might even be raised as early as midnight tonight, just more than four hours away for most Indonesians.

This announcement, which has been broadcast on all major tv-channels in Indonesia, prompted even longer queues at many fuel stations in many cities. Since fuel stocks at stations are limited, some already have run dry with new stock only arriving as early as tomorrow or the day after.
