Balinese looking to take more money from tourists

DENPASAR  Efforts by Bali’s provincial House of Representatives to impose a “donation” on tourists passing through Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport has been strongly rejected by Jakarta who saw the imposition of an additional financial burden on Bali’s tourists as unacceptable.

Quoted in NusaBali, a Balinese legislator who is a member of Commission IV of the National House of Representatives, I Gde Sumarjaya Linggih, said, “if we introduce another fee at the airport, this will not speed the growth of the economy but only serve to slow that growth - particularly in Bali’s tourism industry.”

Trans Jakarta bus system to get more buses

trans.jpgJAKARTA  To increase the frequency of buses in the TransJakarta bus system, the city government has promised to add more buses to th system. This will be arranged by Jakarta governor Fauzi Bowo. At this moment, the TransJakarta bus system operator has 329 buses in it’s fleet. The buses are used on seven corridors. Most routes now are overcrowded during operational hours, forcing people to be on overcrowded buses or to wait long for an empty bus to show up.

Outside this promise, the city government didn’t announce yet when the bus corridors will be sterilized from other traffic again. Two days ago the government has already cleaned the corridors from foreign vehicles, but this didn’t turn out to be a permanent solution. Earlier all traffic was allowed onto the special bus corridors because some were still under construction, but now those drivers say they use the special routes because traffic jams on on the remaining lanes has increased.

The concept of the busway system was created to create an effective form of public transport in the huge city without involving them in the always-present traffic jams as well. The ever increasing number of vehicles in the city is the main cause of all these traffic jams. The fact that some general lanes are now only to be used by the buses is said to be not a big contributing factor to these traffic jams.
