Arak: Not your average Balinese spirit

Tourists visiting Bali always find the island intoxicating, especially for those who try the locally brewed traditional alcohol, arak.

Arak, Bali’s pride and joy of spirits, is a colorless and sugarless beverage, distilled from palm sap or rice, with a 20 to 50 percent alcohol content.

With its high alcoholic content, arak drinkers do not need long to begin feeling its effects kick in.

Bali targets 1.9 million foreign tourists in 2008

The Bali administration has targeted a 9 percent increase in foreign tourist arrivals, with vacationers from Australia and the Asia Pacific countries expected to continue to be its main market. “It would be good if we could reach two million but we have already set an official target of 1.9 million people,” province tourism agency head Gde Nurjaya said Saturday.

The administration’s target last year was 1,600,000, a number exceeded with 1,667,000 arrivals.
